Port St Lucie, Fl- A 12-year old has confessed to the recent crime sprees targeting Kias and Hyundais.
Here are the details from the Port St Lucie Police:
Yesterday afternoon, PSLPD Detectives charged a 12-year-old suspect with 8 counts of attempted grand theft of a motor vehicle, 3 counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle and 8 counts of criminal mischief. The suspect was arrested and transported to the St. Lucie Regional Juvenile Detention Center.
The investigation revealed from October 5th, 2023, to November 28th, 2023, PSLPD received 7 reports of auto thefts and 8 reports of attempted auto thefts in the western region of Port St. Lucie. The auto thefts and attempted auto thefts occurred in the 1400 block of SW Hackensack Ave., the 4200 block of SW Hagaplan St., the 4100 block of SW Rardin St., the 1500 block of SW Hackensack Ave., the 1400 block of SW Gadsan Ave., the 4100 block of SW Batavia St., the 1500 block of SW Falmouth Ave., the 1500 block of SW Gager Rd., the 1200 block of SW Amboy Ave., the 1300 block of SW Ingrassina Ave., and the 1300 block of SW Bartell Ave.
The crimes primarily occurred during the overnight hours and the suspect was specifically targeting certain models of Kias and Hyundais that were left unlocked. Detectives originally arrested the suspect on 4 of the auto thefts that occurred from October 5th, 2023, to November 7th, 2023.
The suspect did not qualify to be detained and was released from the St. Lucie Regional Detention Center. On November 8th, 2023, PSLPD Officers patrolling the western region arrested the suspect again for loitering and prowling after responding to a 911 call for an attempted vehicle burglary.
The suspect was taken to the St. Lucie Regional Detention Center, but was released again because he did not qualify to be detained. From November 9th, 2023, to November 28th, 2023, PSLPD continued to receive several reports of auto thefts and attempted auto thefts targeting unlocked Kias and Hyundais. Upon reviewing the suspect’s original confession for the initial 4 auto thefts, Detectives were able to establish probable cause to arrest the suspect.
On November30th, 2023. During that interview, the suspect confessed to the remaining crimes mentioned above.
Detectives continue to investigate these cases at this time.
