BODY OF MAN WHO WENT MISSING IN WATER WHILE TRYING TO RETRIEVE HIS BOAT, HAS BEEN RECOVERED

The body of 74 year old James Summer was recovered about 50-yards from the dock where he was said to have gone missing last night.

A special piece of sonar equipment provided by FWC detected Summer’s body in about 12-feet of water. Martin County Fire Rescues Dive Team was able to retrieve Mr. Summer’s body just before noon today.

The initial incident happened at the Hosford Park boat launch around 6pm last night. It appears that Mr. Summer was attempting to launch his boat in the water to take it to his near-by home. The boat broke loose and began to drift out in to the water, at which time, Mr. Summer swam out and attempted to climb aboard to keep the vessel from moving further out. A family member who was there at the time saw Mr. Summer grab the side of the boat, but then slipped back into the water. He did not resurface.

Multiple agencies, including Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Martin County Fire Rescue, and FWC spent much of last evening and early morning searching the dark murky water for the victim. They faced a number of challenges including zero visibility, debris, and the presence of numerous gators, however, they continued to search until they were successful at locating Mr. Summer. James Summer is a seasonal resident of our area. He is from Indianapolis.
