PSLPD Major Crimes Unit Detectives Make Arrest in Last Night’s Shooting

At approximately 5:39 pm yesterday afternoon, PSLPD received a call of a shooting in the 1600 block of SW Buttercup Ave. Upon arrival, officers located the adult victim, who was uninjured from the shooting, and immediately detained the shooter, Jason Stefanik.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was at the residence for a child custody exchange. As the victim was at the front door of the residence to pick up his child, the suspect came from around the outside of the house and initiated a physical altercation.

At some point, the suspect retreated into his home and the victim retreated towards his vehicle that was parked in the driveway of the residence. As the victim was standing at his vehicle, the suspect exited the home with a handgun and fired one shot at the victim, missing him, but striking an unoccupied parked vehicle across the street. There were no injuries from the shooting.

Late last night, PSLPD Major Crimes Unit Detectives arrested and charged Jason Stefanik with one count of Attempted First Degree Homicide. Stefanik was transported to the St. Lucie County Jail where he is currently housed with no bond.
