14-year-old boy critically hurt following dirt bike crash

Fort Pierce. Fl- A 14-year-old boy riding a motorized dirt bike sustained critical injuries Sunday after he struck a tree, according to the Fort Pierce Police.

Here are the details:

On April 5, 2024, at approximately 7:04 p.m., multiple Fort Pierce Police officers responded to the 1300 block of Birch Street in reference to a traffic crash.

Investigation revealed a mini bike with two occupants was traveling east on Soltman Avenue when the driver apparently failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Birch Street. The mini bike collided with a 2023 Ford F-250 pickup, which resulted in both riders being ejected.

A 14-year-old male of Fort Pierce was critically injured in the crash. He was declared a trauma alert and transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries early Sunday (April 7, 2024) afternoon.

It remains unclear who was driving the mini bike at the time of the crash. Witnesses reported seeing the second rider flee the crash scene with the damaged mini bike, along with two riders on a second mini bike.

Neither the 34-year-old male driver of the pickup nor his 33-year-old male passenger, both of Fort Pierce, were injured. They remained on scene and cooperated with officers.

This remains an active and open investigation. Anyone who witnessed this incident or has information is asked to contact Officer Stokes at 772-302-4764 or sstokes@fppd.org. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 800-273-8477.
