Victim of Hit-and-Run on Indian River Drive taken off Life Support

On December 26, 2023 William Brown was hit on his E-bike on Indian River Drive near Walton Road.  He was out buying dog food. His car was broken so the only way he was able to go was on the E-bike.  The driver fled.

As the mangled bike laid on Indian River Drive according to witnesses people just drove around it.  Some stopped to help. A dark SUV was seen in the area when someone heard it. They said it stopped then left.

William was airlifted to Lawnwood Hospital where he fought for his life. He has multiple surgeries. He had multiple injuries especially to his head. He was declared brain dead Friday Dec 30 at 9:27 AM and died at 5:07 PM. 

According to witnesses St Lucie Sheriff and State Troopers were on the scene. We never saw anything posted from the Sheriff. Not even an alert to stay away from the area. No bolo to look for for the dark SUV. Crickets (There was also another incident in the same not as tragic.)

Shellie ,who is Williams significant other will be putting a Go Fund me together and we will be posting that.

Our hearts go out to Shellie and to Williams Family. Please do not stop asking questions until they find the person who did this.

Besides being tragic there are lots of questions regarding why the public was not informed by law enforcement. It makes you wonder how many events happen that we don’t even know about.

    You should be ashamed of yourself turning this man’s death into an opportunity to bash the sheriff’s office…RIP Mr. Williams.

      hi I’m simply documenting what happened so I’m not ashamed at all. The significant other has not received a phone call yet. She has no idea if they are even pursuing this case. This is now hit and run with death.

      hi Lisa! I’m not bashing anyone. I’m simply documenting what happened. I think the family deserves an update on where the Sheriff is at in the investigation. Just an fyi-i love the St Lucie County deputies they work so hard. Everything was good there until a few weeks ago when Sheriff Mascara retired.

      protocol is when there is hit-and-run the sheriff or the police post a bolo with a description of the car. the news media picks it up and everyone spreads the word. Previously with Sheriff Mascara we got important information for the media and the public. The first in an alert. People had no idea what was going on so they drove toward the accident. This is basic public safety 101. I’m sure its also protocol to follow up with the victims family. Bashing would be asking what happened to the Sherriffs office Facebook page. It’s being used to promote one individual and not the do the actual work of the Sheriff. That would be bashing. I’ll leave that to someone else. thanks

      She’s simply trying to help us find who did this. And yes as far as the sheriff’s office they are telling us anything at lest some one is trying to help get answers

    i appreciate you posting this story as we were south of here when this occurred and had to reroute to get home. praying for his family, what a horrible way to pass. praying they find the driver.

    We too have similar concerns around distracted driving and the change needed to minimize this. Our daughter was hit and killed by a SLSO in May. She was in the crosswalk. The light was red. There was no protocol followed to clear the intersection. We sit here and wait…. for justice to be served

      As note the night of the accident there was no alert to avoid the area. As you know its a long way between streets and hard to turn around.

    Cyndi – our daughter s accident was handed over to the FHP and the investigator i believe has supported us well. The case is sitting with Tallahassee. We still have no outcome – rolling into 8 months. if this was a civilian it would be different. The officer is still working in the office.

    Yes thank you for posting this story and not letting anything get brushed away!! On May 5 2023 my daughter Kaitlyn Kohler was hit and killed by a St Lucie County Sheriff Deputy. It has been almost 8 months and we are still waiting for an answer… for action.. something to be done!!! The deputy is still working!! We are doing all we can to keep her story out there!! We are NOT going anywhere until justice is served!! My daughter was doing everything she was supposed to that night…following all of the laws!!! He was NOT!!!!
    Prayers go out to this man’s family and friends. My heart breaks for you all!
